MY THOUGHTS ON THE game:

(Longer Review pinned in the comments below)

I am a lifelong Zelda fan. My top 2 games of all time are Ocarina of Time and Link to the Past. I want to put that out there, before I gush about this game. that`s a clear bias going into this...

First, I want to say that the artwork in Breath of the Wild (BotW) absolutely amazing in this game. it`s been said millions of times before, but graphics don`t make a game. Nintendo has always made up from its smaller processing power with stunning art direction. This game exemplifies Nintendo`s dedication to its art design. There are dozens of different environments, all equally beautiful. You`ll find yourself traversing through mountain ranges, lake shores, dense woods, grassy knolls, wetlands, snow peaks and more. For my money, this is the best looking grass I`ve ever seen in any game.

I don`t know what it is exactly, but the way it sways in the wind just makes you want to stare at it for hours.
The combat has also been upgraded from previous Zelda games. It still feels like the basic combat system we`ve seen since Ocarina of Time, but with more advanced movements. The parrying system is excellent, and makes the combat all about you recognizing enemy patterns and getting your timing down. Don`t get me wrong, against weaker enemies you can just button mash Y and be done with them. But with harder enemies, you have to be more precise. The fact that it`s so easy to bring up your bow in BotW makes it a big part of combat. And since you can`t rely on your weapons surviving a full fight, you have to take stock of what you have before you engage in battles. it`s the most complex fighting system we`ve seen in a Zelda game, and it never gets dull. You can choose to stay at range by shooting arrows, throwing a boomerang or launching your weapons (you can throw any weapon). You can try and move stealthy and go for sneaky strikes. Or you can dive in straight for close range combat. it`s up to you how you want to engage, and the game gives you all the tools to play with your style.

I`ve never been a big fan of survival games. Crafting food and durability on weapons was driving me crazy. All I wanted was a permanent weapon, and some fairies in case I needed health. But it`s Zelda, so I knew I had to stick with it and give it a chance. As the game went on, I started to appreciate the nuances of the crafting system. Getting the right recipe to get the right effect became extremely satisfying. It would be infuriating when you would use 3 defense buffing mushrooms, but did the wrong recipe that would only give you health instead of a defense buff. Infuriating in a good way; in a way that made you want to make the right mix. As far as the weapons go, I would still have rather have had a permanent sword, but at the same time without this system, it`s unlikely I would have tried many different weapons. They make up for the short weapons lifespan by providing you with a multitude of different weapons that do a multitude of different things. Hammers help you break rocks faster, swords let you cut down trees, spears are great at range etc. Out of necessity you are forced to use all the weapons, and each plays different. The type of player I am, I would never would have done that unless I had to, and I`m glad I did, because using all the different weapons is a blast.

All in all it`s a masterpiece. it`s an absolutely must play for a Wii U or Switch owner. There is one glaring flaw that I MUST mention. I played this game on the Wii U. We had an opportunity to get it 2 days early on the Wii U, so we took it. If I would have known how much worse it plays on the Wii U. I would have just waited, but there can be extreme frame lag on Wii U. it`s not always there, but very noticeable, especially during combat sequences. I`m not the type of person who needs 60 fps to enjoy a game. I`m fine with a steady 30. But the game can dip to the low teens at times, and mess up your combat. Some might say, "well you should only play it on the Switch." I think that`s unfair, especially considering that the game was originally designed for the Wii U, and Wii U owners didn`t get any other new Zelda title other than this one. The frame lag did not kill the game for me, but it`s something that must be mentioned. it`s unfortunate that they didn`t lower the graphics more to compensate. The game is massive, and almost anywhere you can see you can get to, so I understand it`s difficult on the hardware but I would have rather played a steady 30fps with lower graphics. I did get a chance to play on the Switch recently, and it was steady most of the time. there was a bit of lag every now and again, but nothing compared to the Wii U version.

Score: Wii U - 9.5, Switch - 10
